چکیده

(3) The function of the flagellate stage is one of sexual reproduction. (4) The parasite, after entering the fly's intestine in its infective " spore stage," penetrates the intestinal wall in the upper part of the intestine, and reaches the loose areolar tissue under the lining membrane of the intestine, in which it divides by fission, multiplies, and grows to maturity. (5) The process of growth in the tissue usually occupies three days, at the end of which period the mature flagellate bores its way back to the lumen of the gut. (6) On emerging into the lumen of the gut a process of sexual conjugation takes place almost at once and cannot usually be observed after a lapse of 15 minutes after the migration of the parasite. (7) After one to two hours during which the macronucleus divides and gives origin to a number of minute spherical spores, a process of

Effect of the entomopathogenic fungus, Entomophthora muscae (Zygomycetes: Entomophthoraceae), on sex pheromone and other cuticular hydrocarbons of the house fly, Musca domestica.

House fly (Musca domestica) males are highly attracted to dead female flies infected with the entomopathogenic fungus Entomophthora muscae. Because males orient to the larger abdomen of infected flies, both visual and chemical cues may be responsible for the heightened attraction to infected flies. Our behavioral assays demonstrated that the attraction is sex-specific-males were attracted more ...

Phage Formation in Staphylococcus Muscae Cultures

1. The release of S. muscae phage in veal infusion medium is correlated with lysis of the host. 2. The release of the bacterial virus in Fildes' synthetic medium occurs in a step-wise manner before observable lysis of the cells occurs. This result has been confirmed by both turbidimetric readings and direct microscopic examination of the infected cells.

Induction of differentiation in Herpetomonas samuelpessoai by dimethylsulfoxide.

Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) induces in Herpetomonas samuelpessoai, grown in a chemically defined medium at 28 degrees C the transformation of promastigotes into paramastigotes and opisthomastigotes. This effect was dependent on the period of cultivation and the concentration of DMSO. Initially, DMSO induced the appearance of paramastigotes and later, of opisthomastigotes. Approximately 43% opistho...

Comparative Studies of Herpetomonads and Leishmanias

Nine strains of herpetomonads have been isolated in pure culture from eight varieties of insects, and three strains from two species of plants. Four of the cultures were derived from latex-feeding insects (Oncopeltus fasciatus, Oncopeltus sp. ?, Lygaeus kalmii) and three from latex plants (Asclepias syriaca, Asclepias nivea), two from mosquitoes (Culex pipiens and Anopheles quadrimaculatus), on...

Sequential Utilization of Hosts from Different Fly Families by Genetically Distinct, Sympatric Populations within the Entomophthora muscae Species Complex

The fungus Entomophthora muscae (Entomophthoromycota, Entomophthorales, Entomophthoraceae) is a widespread insect pathogen responsible for fatal epizootic events in many dipteran fly hosts. During epizootics in 2011 and 2012 in Durham, North Carolina, we observed a transition of fungal infections from one host, the plant-feeding fly Delia radicum, to a second host, the predatory fly Coenosia ti...
